Robin Williams
1951-2014Sorry I haven't posted in so long. Supremely busy, as always.
Barbara (who first met Robin Williams when they were high school students in Detroit) and I were shocked at the news yesterday.
Here is A. O. Scott's remembrance, which may or may not ever appear in my national edition of the New York Times.
(Link not working yet. Maybe I'll try again later.)

This news is so sad. I am so sad.
It seems Robin Williams was always there...and now he isn't. I thank him for all the laughter he brought into my life.
Sometimes those people who make us laugh, are the ones battling deep sadness and struggles.
I lived for eight years in Marin county in CA and taught school there. Robin Williams was a member of the community and so well loved.
May he rest in peace.
(((HUGS)))
He battled the drug and alcohol abuse for years. The depression was probably the underlying cause - so many attempt to self medicate... It is very sad when depression wins - we in turn all lose. He will be missed.
It was a shock to hear....It came out on the 10 P.M. local news last night....I read how he died in this morning's paper.....
A man of many talents, especially in the comic field.....
He has 4 unreleased movies, 3 due out this year, and 1 next year....I don't think they'll release them now....
My heart goes out to his family.....A legend has died....One who'll never, ever be forgotten.....
I think the whole nation is mourning the loss of this great person. SO sad that he had to end his life in this way. One of his best movies was "Dead Poets Society".
He made us laugh while he cried in his heart it seems.
Considering that I tend to prefer the serious to comedy, it is saying something how deeply I will miss Robin Williams. Dead Poet Society in particular is one of my favorite movies of all time. My partner likes to fall asleep to the sound of movies so the night after we heard we put on Patch Adams. I couldn't tear myself away to sleep and ended up watching to the end and crying doubly at every sad or bittersweet moment. May he find the light in his lives beyond this.
When I think that Barbara met robin William during her studies ,I understand the big shock you got
