Not an original headline, so I apologize to Aaron Rodgers.

Nine hundred schools were closed in Los Angeles today, because of an anonymous threatening email sent to school board members in more than one city, including New York City, where the letter was regarded as a hoax.  I'm not laughing, but do you know who is?  ISIS and all their sympathizers, that's who.

The way to terrorize a population is to make them fearful.  An attack here or there, once in a while, serves a purpose.  So do so-called warnings.

I don't know who sent the email.  Nobody does.  Actually, Homeland Security SHOULD know, or be on the way to finding out.  There are ways to electronically trace those things, aren't there?

The important thing is to not panic, but too many people are in panic mode.  Nobody ever said it better than FDR:  "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

Be vigilant, but live our lives.  I know it's hard, but that's what we gotta do.

  • Given the proximity of Los Angeles to San Bernardino, and the fact that there is already one school in the LAUSD that has been closed for 'credible threats' three days in the last week, one wonders how far one goes before fear should be turned into action. It may in fact be a hoax, but more than half a million students will go to school tomorrow reassured that their school has been swept and they will be safe. I'm sure this decision was not taken lightly.

  • @slmret: Thanks for your input, much of which I was unaware of. I didn't want to sound as harsh as I did. Thanks again for your comment.

  • @twoberry: I completely agree with you that we have to be vigilant but live our lives, and that we have to be careful not to let "them" win.

It's been an interesting day here, with two opposite perspectives on the same issues, based on timing, background and other circumstances leading to opposite decisions. I'm glad it was not my decision to make!

Media chatter here (I live about 50 miles south of downtown LA, and the same from San Bernardino) is still working on who else might have been involved in the events in San Bernardino, what signals might have been missed, what might have/have not been on the hard drive that was/was not thrown into a lake, who else might be out there still plotting yet another attack, and how we protect ourselves from the next attack that is sure to come. Nerves at all levels are still pretty raw.

Again, as you said, be vigilant and lead our lives -- we repeatedly hear "If you see something, say something."

  • Well said. It is fear that clouds our judgement. I hope that there is no more provocation, threats, or actual attacks on citizens. I know there are those in government who are willing to go to war - but then their children are not the ones to be placed in harm's way. I want the saber rattling to cease and peace to descend on all human hearts! Is that too much to ask for Christmas?
